We’ve said it too many times already: HTML5 is what’s next for the Internet and we are going to get accustomed to that. It’s not that it is a bad thing but as this new version of the Web language is starting to get popular, we’ll see more and more web contents based on it, which will lead us to use the best browsers. We still are, however, in the early stages of development, but several programmers want to show us what they’ve been up to regarding HTML5. That’s what Mozilla Firefox Browser did with its Game On competition, a contest that wanted to compile the best HTML5-based games online free. The winners were already announced but here’s my personal favorites games online among the ones that made it to the finals.
A to B
As its name simply indicates, in this physics-based game you’ll have to get a ball from point A to point B. Sounds easy? Well, it’s not. You’ll have to use walls and modifiers to change the ball’s fixed trajectory and lead it to the exit. As levels pass by you’ll face harder challenges that will crack your head. Remember that while you use less attempts to solve a puzzle, you’ll earn more points.
Drunkenweb
If you’ve ever wanted to become a bartender or you simply wish to learn how to make drinks for your friends, this is a perfect game for you. In it, you’ll be asked to prepare several of the most widely-known drinks and you’ll have to mix the right ingredients to keep the customer satisfied. The closes your blend is, the bigger the tip will be. Try to learn how to make each drink and serve them in a precise manner to earn more points!
Favimon
A really funny and original concept for a very entertaining game. In Favimon you’ll have to fight with your favorite websites from all over the Web. How? You’ll start with the Favimon logo, which will become the first of your “soldiers”. Then you’ll have to search any websites you know with the included search engine. If the page is loaded in the database, your warrior will have to confront the logo from the page you’ve just selected. Each logo has its own special attack and defense abilities, as well as some magic spells that will help you during battle.
Gridlight
This is an amazing logical game that will keep you entertained for hours. In it, you have to press the board’s buttons to light all of them on. The catch? Whenever you click one that’s next to a button that is already on, you’ll switch it off. If you want a game to challenge your puzzle skills, Gridlight is the HTML5-based game that will satisfy you.
Mad Tanks TD
Does the world need another Tower defense game? Yes, it does. Mad Tanks TD might not be as pretty as Pirates Love Daisies, but it’s surely as fun. As always, you’ll have to defend your base from the incoming waves of enemies. To do that, you’ll have to place different armed towers, each one with special abilities. Upgrade them, sell them and distribute them wisely through the board to achieve victory.
Sketchout
Who said that HTML5-based games can’t be pretty? Sketchout demonstrates that this is a lie while providing loads of fun in the process. The premise is simple: you must defend the planet from the galactic attacks. To do it, you’ll have to draw lines and bounce the attacking lights to destroy the alien mothership.
StillAlivejs
If you have heard or you have ever played Portal: The Flash version, then this game is ideal for you. It is simply the adaptation from that title to the HTML5 language. In case you don’t know what it is about, this is a platformer in which you’ll have to transport your character and certain objects to the exit. To do it, you’ll have to use your portal gun, a weapon that opens gates with which you can teleport yourself. Although it seems easy, this game will surely test your intelligence.
Tank World
Tanks invade your screen in the tridimensional world this games proposes. OK, the graphics might not be the best available today but who can’t resist the charm of driving a tank and destroying enemies? Additionally, you can create your own levels to have fun with your friends while you fight for supremacy on the battlefield.
Vector racer
Car races never were this awkward. Vector Racer is an online adaptation of a very popular paper game in which players take turns to make their “cars” advance. The game is set in a squared board in which you have to decide to which square you want to move. You’ll have to meditate your movements, though, because if you click in the wrong square you’ll crash and lose the race.
Z-type
A nice game with really neat graphics, Z-type puts you in control of a spaceship that has to destroy its enemies. But this isn’t a simple shoot ‘em up: to kill each of the incoming ships, you’ll have to type the word that is attached to each and every one of them. Of course, you’ll have to write as fast as you can, especially if you don’t want to be destroyed. Great game for getting accustomed to type faster. As you can see, HTML5 continues to grow and develop for 2011 web browsers and so to cover for the most varied tastes. Try all of these not only to see how the new technology is adapting but for getting some fun as well. Additionally, you can check all the contest’s finalists (and the winners!) in the Firefox Labs page. Enjoy this free games!
